Legalisation Requirements for France

France, officially the French Republic, is a transcontinental country spanning Western Europe and overseas regions and territories in the Americas and the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic with its capital in Paris.

A document issued in the United Kingdom to be used in France will need notarisation and/or apostilling to be legally accepted in France.

On 9 October 1961, France signed up to the Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents and it became effective from 25 November 1964. This means that legalisation by the The French Embassy is not required, and once a document has been apostilled it will be accepted in France.

If you need to notarise or apostille your document, we would love to help out. Get in touch to find out more.

Check your document

We notarise many types of documents and can provide different types of certification to meet your needs.

The most popular documents we see are powers of attorney, passports, educational certificates and Companies House documentation. However, there are many other types we see regularly and are familiar with.

If your document is not listed and you are unsure if we can help, email us at info@notary.co.uk and we will be happy to confirm.
