Legalisation for Iraq

Documents issued in the UK to be used in Iraq will need to be (1) notarised and/or (2) apostilled by the FCDO and (3) legalised by the Iraq Embassy in the United Kingdom.  Legalisation at the Iraq Embassy is handled by its Consular Section.

Commercial documents will also need to be stamped by (1) the London Chamber of Commerce and (2) the Arab-British Chamber of Commerce prior to being submitted at the Iraq Embassy.

The Republic of Iraq is located in western Asia, and is home to a diverse range of ethnicities including Arabs, Kurds, Turkmens, Assyrians, Armenians, Mandaeans, Persians, Shabakis and Yazidis.   The official languages are Arabic and Kurdish.

Iraq is a federal parliamentary republic with a presidential system. The capital of Iraq is Baghdad. Iraq was created in 1921 under a League of Nations Mandate as the Kingdom of Iraq. It was administered by Britain until 1932 when Iraq became fully independent as the Hashemite Kingdom of Iraq. In 1958 the Hashemite monarchy was overthrown, and the Iraqi Republic was established, later becoming officially the Republic of Iraq.

Iraq is currently divided into 19 governorates: Al-Anbar, Al-Qadisiyyah, Babylon, Baghdad, Basra, Dhi Qar, Diyala, Dohuk, Erbil, Halabja, Karbala, Kirkuk, Maysan, Muthanna, Najaf, Nineveh, Saladin, Sulaymaniyah and Wasit.

The governorates of Duhok, Erbil, Halabja and Sulaymaniyah comprise the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. Documents to be used in the Kurdistan Region can be legalised by the Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in the United Kingdom, however the documents will only be valid in the Kurdistan Region and not wider Iraq. More information can be found at Legalisation for Kurdistan.
