Legalisation for the UAE

Documents issued in the United Kingdom to be used in the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain) will need to be legalised by the UAE Embassy in the UK. Legalisation is carried out by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation.

Both personal and commercial documents will need to be apostilled by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) before they are submitted to the UAE Embassy. Most documents will also need to be notarised before they can be apostilled.

The UAE Embassy does not accept bundled documents. Each document must be notarised and apostilled separately.

Foreign documents including non-UK degrees or marriage certificates will not be accepted. However they will legalise documents from British Overseas Territories, the Channel Islands, UK Crown Dependencies, Iceland, and the Republic of Ireland, if they are first legalised by either the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or Governors’ Offices of Jersey, Isle of Man and Guernsey, the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs or the Irish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

In exceptional circumstances within their discretion, the embassy may legalise other foreign documents if they are first attested by the relevant diplomatic body of the country of origin of the document in the UK, and then notarised and apostilled in the UK. Please note that some foreign consulates/embassies in London may require the document is first attested by their Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country of origin before the UK diplomatic body will legalise it.

For education certificates, the notarial certificate and the apostille should be on the educational certificate itself. The apostille must not be on a notarial certificate which is then attached to the educational certificate.

Currently the UAE Embassy are only accepting submissions via post. Payment can only be made online via card in Emirati dirhams. Fees include both the UAE fee and a third party transaction fee. The price in GBP is subject to change as it depends on the current exchange rate.

From 11 December 2023, the UAE Embassy will contact the signatory(ies) of all powers of attorney, affidavits and consent letters submitted.
