In the UK, foreign residents can apply for citizenship by naturalisation via the Home Office.

What is a Naturalisation Certificate (UK)?

When you become a citizen of a country, you will receive a naturalisation certificate. This can act as proof of your citizenship.

You may be eligible to apply for British citizenship if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • You have secured indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after living in the UK for five years. You will need to reside in the UK for at least twelve months before applying.
  • You were born in the UK.
  • You are married to/in a civil partnership with a British citizen. You will need to live in the UK for three years before applying.
  • You have had ‘settled status’ under the EU Settlement Scheme for at least twelve months.
  • You’re the child of a British citizen or a parent with British overseas territories citizenship.
  • You are stateless.

Naturalisation vs. Registration

Naturalisation is the route for foreign nationals who have lived in the UK for a long period and meet specific requirements to apply for British citizenship.

Registration is a simpler process for those who already have an entitlement to British nationality due to their parents’ status or birth circumstances.

Notarising a British Certificate of Naturalisation

A qualified notary public can authenticate and certify your document to guarantee it will be recognised abroad. After verifying the authenticity of the certificate, we will attach a certificate of notarisation and apply an apostille if required.

Notarisation adds a level of credibility to a naturalisation certificate. This ensures it is acceptable for use in various legal and administrative processes.

Notary.co.uk aims to simplify the notarial and legalisation process. If you have questions about your documents, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We will get back to you promptly with a clear breakdown of the services required and the costs involved.

Why Might You Need To Notarise a Certificate of Naturalisation?

You might need to notarise a British Certificate of Naturalisation for various reasons, particularly when it’s required as legal proof of your citizenship in situations where you need to validate the document’s authenticity. Common scenarios include:

  1. Overseas legal matters: If you’re living abroad or dealing with legal matters in another country, foreign authorities may require your Certificate of Naturalisation to be notarised to prove its legitimacy.
  2. Immigration purposes: If you’re applying for a visa or residency in another country, the immigration authorities might request notarised proof of your British citizenship.
  3. Opening foreign bank accounts: Some international financial institutions require notarised documentation to verify your identity and citizenship when opening an account.
  4. Employment: For certain jobs, especially in countries outside the UK, employers may require notarised proof of citizenship.
