How we notarise and apostille a utility bill

How we notarise your utility bills depends on how they were issued to you in the first place. Your utility bill may be provided to you in any of the following ways:

  1. Issued as hardcopy and posted to you;
  2. Issued as an electronic copy;

1. Physically posted

If the utility bill has been physically posted to you, you will need to provide us with the original document that you received. We will:

  1. Inspect the original
  2. Make a copy of the original
  3. Notarise the copy as a true and an accurate copy of the original.

This notarised copy can then be apostilled by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

2. Issued Electronically

If the utility bill has been issued electronically we will need to verify where you obtained the document from. If you downloaded it from a website or app, you will need to show us how you logged in and obtained it. We will then:

  1. Print the utility bill
  2. Notarise the printed copy, making reference to having verified it electronically.

Once notarised we can then submit the utility bill to the FCDO to be apostilled.

Note: Utility bills usually only need to be notarised.  However, if you do need an apostille, consular legalisation or translation we can handle all steps for you.

Check your document

We notarise many types of documents and can provide different types of certification to meet your needs.

The most popular documents we see are powers of attorney, passports, educational certificates and Companies House documentation. However, there are many other types we see regularly and are familiar with.

If your document is not listed and you are unsure if we can help, email us at info@notary.co.uk and we will be happy to confirm.

Why might you need to notarise a utility bill?

Utility bills are a great way for confirming your address. They are commonly requested by organisations across the globe who wish to see evidence that you or your business is residing at a particular address.

What is a utility bill?

Utilities are essential services that keep your household or business running, such as water, gas or electricity.  A utility bill is a statement, usually issued monthly, invoicing you for utilities that you are receiving.

A utility bill will state that name of the account holder and the full address for where the utility is being serviced. They will also be dated.  When using utility bills as a proof of address, it is standard across many industries to ask that the utility bill is no older than 3 months.

What are examples of a utility bill?

As stated, utility bills are charges for essential services that keep your home running. Here are some common examples:

  • Water bill
  • Gas bill
  • Electricity bill
  • Trash collection/waste disposal
  • Sewerage (sometimes included in the water bill)
  • Internet/Broadband Landline phone
  • In some cases, streaming services (if bundled with cable)
  • TV licence may be a utility bill if it is essential for your business to show live TV

Is A Mobile Phone Bill Considered A Utility Bill?

A mobile phone bill is generally not considered a utility. This is because mobile phone service offers a wider range of features beyond basic communication, and providers compete in a more open market compared to traditional utilities. However, a landline phone bill is typically considered a utility bill because it provides essential communication infrastructure.
