The steps required for notarisation and legalisation will depend on how your document was issued:

• An original Department of Health (DH) document not signed by an official of the issuing authority

This needs notarisation before it can be apostilled. The notary will need to either confirm the original document with the Department of Health or make a copy and notarise the copy as a ‘true copy of the original’.  Once it has been notarised, it can be submitted to the FCDO to be apostilled.

• A printout of your electronic Department of Health (DH) document produced from the original PDF or other electronic document.

This needs notarisation before being apostilled. The notary will need to verify where the document was sent from, and – on being satisfied it is authentic – can complete the notarisation. It can then be apostilled after it has been notarised.
